Somme, Battles of
The Battles of the Somme occurred between France and Germany during World War I and World War II. The battle of 1916, a Franco-British offensive, began in January and continued during the battle of verdun. This enormous battle, at which armored tanks first appeared, resulted in a huge number of casualties on both sides. The battle of 1940 was a defensive undertaken by General maxime weygand to contain the German advance during the evacuation of Allied troops at Dunkirk.
